Mold on Your Mind?

Vancouver is full of sunshine, beaches, warm weather, and… mold. BC’s climate is full of mold spores all around. It may not affect us in our daily routine, but if your home had water damage at some point, chances are mold spores have started to reproduce

Molds are a distinct species within the fungi family and are a part of the natural environment. Although there are numerous species of mold, some have been shown to be allergenic and produce mycotoxins that could be harmful to one’s health. Due to their tiny size, mold spores can be anywhere there is air, including under kitchen cabinets, underneath the carpet, and inside wall cavities. Once they land on a damp spot, mold spores begin growing. They digest any organic material they grow on in order to survive.

Attics are one of the most common areas of mold growth in the home. Attics tend to have the perfect conditions for mold growth (hot, humid, and an abundant food source from the wood sheathing). The main signs of attic mold are dark stains on plywood, mildew smell in your attic, hot and stuffy attic air, frost buildup or roof sheathing, water dripping from smoke detectors and ceiling fans.

Although there are thousands of species of mold on earth, the most common molds that are found in North America are:

Cladosporium

The most common indoor and outdoor mold. Species produce olive-green to brown or black colonies and have darkly pigmented conidia that are formed in simple or branching chains.

Stachybotrys

The most known is also referred to as ‘black mold”. Chronic coughing and sneezing, irritation to the eyes, mucous membranes of the nose and throat, chronic fatigue, and persistent headaches can all be symptoms from exposure.

Penicillium & Aspergillus

Indicator molds are mostly associated with high moisture environments. Their spores can be drawn into the lungs during normal breathing.

Mold Remediation Process

1. Initial Inspection

Our technicians will perform a visual inspection to determine if a licensed mold assessor needs to be dispatched to take samples and generate a report for protocol.

2. Stopping the Source

Mold spores grow when there is a presence of water in a structure. We will determine the source and have it stopped to prevent further damage.

3. Setting Up Containment

Our technicians will set up barriers to contain the affected area before it can spread to unaffected areas.

4. Establishing Negative Air Equipment

To make sure that contaminants do not escape from the contained area, we will set up HEPA Air Scrubbers to establish negative air pressure.

5. Removing Contaminated Materials

The only way to handle a mold problem is to remove the contaminated building materials. Even if mold was painted over, the spores remain dormant until coming in contact with water again.

6. Cleaning the Surface

Our technicians use specific cleaning and sanitizing agents to treat the areas that were once affected.

7. Drying the Area

Dehumidification equipment is set up to remove the moisture in the area that first caused the microbial growth.

8. Post-Remediation

Once all the work is complete, the certified mold assessor will return to conduct a post-remediation evaluation to determine that the area is no longer contaminated by mold.
